A vehicle inspection is a mandated procedure in which a vehicle is inspected to verify that it is in compliance with safety and/or emissions regulations. From state to state, the specifics vary. As a longtime Rockville, MD resident and professional in the mechanic industry, I’ve done a bit of research on the specific regulations to disseminate to you, fellow Maryland resident and vehicle owner!
Our crew here at Preferred Automotive has collected this list of FAQs on vehicle inspections for your reference. Check them out!
When do I need to have my vehicle inspected?
Maryland is a bit unique in comparison to many other states in that residents do not have to have regular inspections to be legal out on the road. There are two situations in which you would need to have your vehicle inspected:
– Your vehicle is currently registered in another state and you have just moved to Maryland. In this case, you have 60 days to register with the state—passing an inspection is one requirement.
– You are a resident of Maryland and have just become the owner of a used vehicle. Yes, even if the car you purchased has already been inspected.
Where can I get my vehicle inspected?
Authorized safety inspection locations are all over of the state. Preferred Automotive is one of those places!
How long does a vehicle inspection take?
Depending on the vehicle, the inspection should take no more than an hour from start to finish.
What does MD safety inspection cover?
In general, the inspection covers brakes, steering, lights, exhaust, safety belts and other crucial components of the vehicle. For more detailed information, go here: http://www.mva.maryland.gov/About-MVA/INFO/58000ASE/58000-01T.htm
What I fail the inspection?
If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will be given a recommendation. Have the necessary repairs performed at your preferred auto service shop—Preferred Automotive!
How long do I have to make the recommended repairs/adjustments?
30 days or 1000 miles—whichever comes first—from the initial inspection. Bring the vehicle for re-inspection to be issued a certificate of compliance. Any longer than this timeframe and you will have to start the process all over.
If the repair can be visually confirmed, is there an additional fee for re-inspection?
No, not usually. An example of this: new light or replaced windshield. Should the re-inspection require lifting the vehicle, there may be a fee, but this is rare.
