Passing a Smog Check: Simple Tips to Help

If your vehicle needs a smog check, you want it to pass so you don’t have to go through the check again or have any costly repairs performed. The best thing you can do is maintain your vehicle well in the first place. When all of the systems are operating properly, you will probably pass the smog check with ease. But if your vehicle isn’t running up to par and you want to avoid expensive repairs, here are a few steps to help you pass the smog check tests.

-Clear the Check Engine Light
If your vehicle is showing the “Check Engine” light, you will fail a smog check automatically. It is a good idea not to ignore this light anyways, but if you want to pass the test, you have to get the light cleared off the dash first. Otherwise, you will have to get a diagnosis and fix before the test is completed.

-Drive the Car on the Highway Two Weeks Before the Test
You will want to drive your vehicle at highways speed for the two weeks before you have the test lined up. This will help your catalytic converter to warm up enough to burn the oil and gas residues that might cause your vehicle to fail.

-Change Dirty Oil
If you are in need of an Rockville, MD oil change as it is, you definitely want to do it before you get a smog check. Dirty oil can ramp up the amount of pollutants your vehicle puts out and cause you to fail the test.

-Get a Tune Up
Get the required maintenance items performed on your vehicle at least two weeks before the smog test. You will have to have two weeks between the tune up and the test in order for the driving to allow the diagnostic tests will work in order for you to pass the smog test correctly.

-Inflate Tires
Before you go in for the smog check, make sure all of your tires are inflated to the proper levels. If the tires are underinflated, the engine has to work harder and may emit more pollutants.

-Check Coolant Levels
The tests run the car at high speeds while it is stationary and that means it will have less air flowing through the radiator to cool it. You will want to make sure your coolant tank is filled properly and if you have a low gas tank, you could be exposed to failure as well.
