Are You Getting Your Vehicle the Preventative Maintenance it Needs?

Our vehicles are like extensions of our bodies these days; we rely on them for everything. From getting to work, to getting the kids to band practice, to grocery shopping, to traveling to a family favorite vacation spot—we want our cars and trucks to last a long time.

That said, there are five preventative maintenance services that will help your vehicle live its longest, most affordable life.

Brake Maintenance

Taking care of the brakes is easily one of the most important safety maintenance items to keep on top of. Rockville, MD brake repairs are often needed because simple brake issue warnings were ignored. For example, what could be an easy brake pad replacement, if left unaddressed for too long, could rapidly turn into a drum and/or rotor replacement. This, obviously, is much costlier.

  • Oil changes

Vehicles need regular oil changes to keep the engine well lubricated and safe from overheating. Most vehicles require an oil change every 5,000 to 6,000 miles, despite what the old rule of “every three months or 3,000 miles” says. Over time, oil gets dirty from debris and dust. During an oil change, this old, dirty oil is flushed out, the filter is replaced, and the vehicle gets to keep running efficiently.

  • Tire Rotation

Approximately every six months or every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, tires need to be rotated to keep from irregular wear. Front tires usually wear more quickly because they tend to work harder than the back. So, these need to be swapped out by being removed and rearranged to keep the tread even on all four tires.

  • Balancing and Alignments

It’s smart to have the wheels balanced and realigned each time your vehicle is brought in for its regular oil change and tire rotation. Routine balance—every six months or every 6,000 to 8,000 miles—ensures that weight is distributed evenly around the axle, so tires don’t vibrate during operation. Alignment has more to with making sure tires are perfectly parallel to one another and vertical to the road. These maintenance items not only improve comfort while driving, but they also improve fuel efficiency.

  • Test the Battery

This is a less regular maintenance item, but an important one. No one wants to be stranded due to a dead battery, right? Whether or not your vehicle is showing signs of battery failure, it’s smart to have the battery tested every so often so you’re never “one of those drivers,” stranded in a parking lot somewhere.
